The Kevin Hing Award

This is presented each year to the highest achiever in Mathematics in Year 12. Kevin was a member of staff at Nowra High School.

Carol Kilner & Ian Daley Award

Another award, started in 2014,  is given to two students in Year 10 for their achievement in Mathematics.  Carol and Ian are retired teachers from Nowra High School.

The Kevin Hing Award

This is presented each year to the highest achiever in Mathematics in Year 12. Kevin was a teacher at Nowra HS who passed away.  A plaque is located in the school's admin corridor next to Ms Wellington's office with their names on it.

Another award, started in 2014,  is given to two students in Year 10 for their achievement in Mathematics.  Carol and Ian are retired teachers from Nowra High School.

 

In 2015 the award recipients were N Anderson and J Ibrahim.
 

National Mathematics Summer School

Next school: 8–21 January 2017

The National Mathematics Summer School is a two week residential school held each January at the Australian National University, Canberra. It is aimed at talented students of mathematics who have just completed Year 11.

The National Mathematics Summer School is an activity of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) and the Australian National University. You can find out more about it on the AAMT website or on the National Mathematics Summer School website.

Students from NSW who apply to attend the National Mathematics Summer School are selected on the basis of the attached criteria.

Year 11 students from NSW who are interested in attending the school next January should download a self-nomination form. Apply now.

NSW teachers can nominate one or more of their students who they believe would benefit from attending. Download a School Nomination form now.

Nominations for the January 2017 school must be sent to nmss@mansw.nsw.edu.au by the last Friday in July.

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.
